This is the second and final installment in posts related to art and web design. In first part, we discussed about art movements in general and how to apply cubist style in web design. In this part, we will take a look at surrealism and expressionism.
Surrealism and Web Design
The surrealist art movement began in the late 1920’s and was pioneered by great artists like Salvador Dali, Magritte and Max Ernst.Following are some examples of surrealist art work:
Surrealism as an art movement meant to expose psychological truth by stripping ordinary objects of their normal significance, in order to create a compelling image that was beyond ordinary formal organization. Surrealism is all about imagination and no logical explanation can be given for such creative works. . In fact, surrealism has been defined as pure psychic automatism, by which one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Truly speaking, surrealist art is much more than yet another art style. This art movement in the early half of the 20th century was deeply associated with expressing free ideas amidst the then prevailing political environment and restrictive customs and structures. Certainly, you cannot blend it entirely with web design as this can result in a complicated and a hard to understand design for the user.
So, how do we include surrealist art in web design? You might have got the idea that surrealism is all about free thinking beyond the limits of logic and standard trends. In web design, it means thinking beyond the regular standard of header, footer and two column layouts. You should express your thoughts in your web design rather than restricting them with the standard column layouts. Surrealist web design is ideally suited for portfolio websites. Following are some examples which depict free thinking in web design:
Expressionism and Web Design
Expressionism was a cultural movement originating in Germany at the start of the 20th-century. In expressionism, heavy emphasis is placed on communication through emotions. Similar to surrealist art, you cannot blend it entirely with web design because it is built on complex psychic structures with strong depiction of emotions.Following are some examples of expressionist art work:
In web design, expressionism can be associated with social awareness websites like those related with global warming or aids and anti-drug campaigns. Social awareness requires a strong message to be sent among the masses and this can be achieved effectively with expressionism in web design.Following is an example of expressionism(to some extent) in web design:
Final Thoughts
